i think it’s obvious that the story is a tragedy
I saw it as a tragedy, as well. Especially the end because the tree thinks that she has finally gotten the boy to love her. But he doesn’t. He wants to use her to sit on and then he will eventually die and leave her alone, mutilated, and completely changed from who she was.
Not only that, but he took so much from her that she’ll never be able to give anything to anyone else again. He, literally, left her scarred and appreciated nothing about her.
I found it a sad and wholly upsetting story.
